A Model on Mentoring

Posted by Keith Howard on Friday, June 29, 2012, In : Inspirational

A popular television series features various forms of communal living in America. Weekly episodes feature the Hutterites, the Amish, and other peripheral movements. Granted there are dysfunctional displays, after all it is drama. The tension makes for good TV. And I notice misapplication of Bible beliefs and intentions, as well as improper understanding of Church practice. But as one embedded in American norms, I am struck with the simplicity of their lifestyles. Each movement is absolutely c...

Elisha Room

Posted by Keith Howard on Tuesday, June 19, 2012, In : Inspirational

A number of years ago I was asked to be the speaker at a special banquet in honor of newly ordained ministers. I asked my wife Stefanie to help me on a project. She is very good with crafts. We went to a craft supply and purchased the items needed to make a Bible that would fit on the bookshelf in each of their libraries. We painted it to appear just like any other Bible you would have in your collection. The Bible was made of cardboard and was hollow. In it we recreated the Elisha Room of 2 ...

The Christian Hokey-Pokey

Posted by Keith Howard on Sunday, June 3, 2012, In : Inspirational

I don't believe I have ever met a Christian that has not, at one time or another, willingly or by provocation, participated in the kid-song Father Abraham had many sons. It is our Christian version of the Hokey Pokey.

Do you remember when the religious leaders got in an argument with Jesus? They claimed special credentials because they were from the lineage of Abraham. I can just hear the dripping arrogance as they retort, "Abraham is our father." Jesus said in essence, "I know you're from the...

I'll Run No Matter What

Posted by Keith Howard on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, In : Inspirational

"'I'll run no matter what!' Ahimaaz insisted. 'Alright then, run!' Joab said." (2 Samuel 18:23)

One soldier was afraid to take the life of the rebel Absalom because he overheard the king's command to bring him back unharmed. Joab had to do the deed himself. And then his armor bearers finished him off. But this young man Ahimaaz is fearless, He volunteers to bear the bad news of Absalom's death to the king. Joab refuses him because he usually brought good news, and sends another. Ahimaaz persis...

The Implications of Rapture Theology upon Ecology

Posted by Keith Howard on Friday, May 4, 2012, In : Theology
Here is a piece about the way belief in a literal, physical rapture of the Church impacts the current issues of ecology in a green world. We live on a privileged planet. We are called to be stewards. What does that mean for a Pentecostal Christian? A heady piece of theology with in-depth explanations and observations of opposing views. The Implications of Rapture Theology upon Ecology.

The Apex of Human Experience

Posted by Keith Howard on Wednesday, February 22, 2012, In : Theology
The very best of the very best when it comes to being a human. Our absolute highest, purest moment, to use Isaiah's verbiage, is filthy rags in his sight. The height of human experience happens when God graces our high with his low. He comes down to the top of the mountain. Think about it. Read about it.

Integrity

Posted by Keith Howard on Tuesday, January 17, 2012, In : Theology
After a string of moral failures that taint the landscape of Genesis how refreshing is it to encounter Joseph, a true man of integrity! His commitment to excellence is the same in the cistern as it is in the governor's chariot, the same in the cell block as it is before Pharaoh. I believe you will find my post to be uplifting.

Was It Right?

Posted by Keith Howard on Saturday, January 14, 2012, In : Theology
I don't know anyone who doesn't get frustrated a little when they are wronged. Most Christians are able to remain composed when they face a little offense. If the wrong-doing ramps up a little the tension typically escalates on the part of the one wronged. But let there be unspeakable injustice and even the most seasoned of believers feels justified in retaliating. How is it to be done in a godly way. That's what my post Was It Right? is about. I hope you will read and enjoy it.

The Hot Coals and the Knife

Posted by Keith Howard on Monday, January 9, 2012,
Here is a post that will make you stop and consider the great lengths God the Father and Jesus Christ went to in order to secure salvation for us. It is imaged by the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his pride and joy, Isaac. There is imagery carried forward into the crucifixion event. If we can zoom backwards from Isaac and his Father on the mountain, we will see Jesus and his Father filling the expanse of eternity with salvation.  I hope you enjoy this thoughtful piece,

The Posture of Prayer

Posted by Keith Howard on Sunday, January 8, 2012, In : Theology
Does it really matter whether we sit, stand, or kneel in prayer? I have a dear friend who prays with his eyes open, presumably intentionally; though I've never asked him. I recall numerous times he would glance around the men's group as he prayed, and I could sense the depth of sincerity in his eyes and tones. Of course, how would I have ever known unless my eyes were open too? I know, right? Still, having said this, I feel physical posture is important. I find it really meaningful to let my ...

Is This What Faith Looks Like?

Posted by Keith Howard on Friday, January 6, 2012, In : Theology
Someone has said 90% of success is just showing up.  I think maybe Abraham felt that way from time to time.  At age 86 he's told he will be the father of nations, but at age 99 he's simply wishing to gift the inheritance to his servant.  He just kept showing up, being there, being available, being especially present to the Lord.  Faith is so much more than the excitement of a prophetic moment.  The greatest value of faith is exemplified in the long haul of the daily grind, what Pat Meye has c...

Genealogies

Posted by Keith Howard on Wednesday, January 4, 2012, In : Theology
I find it very encouraging to study the genealogies of scripture and realize that they are intended for affirmation and confirmation of our faith.  For instance, Noah's daddy knew Adam personally.  Noah was still alive when Abraham was in his 50s.  He could ask questions first-hand.

Read more in my post.

Yes, the genealogies are intended for far more than just to be bogged down in the begats.

Book Review: Michael Green, Evangelism in the Early Church

Posted by Keith Howard on Monday, October 3, 2011, In : Theology
Michael Green has written an excellent history of the early church history.  This review summarizes some of his important evaluations.  The timing of Jesus' earthly life has all the earmarks of perfect timing regarding language, road building, and issues of war and peace.  Additionally, there are assessments that inform current church life, e.g., the spread of the gospel to Jew and Gentile alike as a priority, the role of apostles, and tacitly matters of church polity.

It was a great joy to travel with a group of nine to Santa Ana, El Salvador this past week where we ministered in churches and schools doing a total of 13 outreaches.

However, much of our time was spent putting tin roofs on the plastic houses in three different squatter villages.  They were displaced by a volcano six years ago.  It is the rainy season and the plastic leaks.  No running water or electricity.  The villages are inhabited predominantly by single mothers and children.  We helped th...

A Life Lived Well

Posted by Keith Howard on Saturday, March 26, 2011, In : Inspirational

This single release, Torn, is a tribute to my Dad, Rev. James E. Howard, November 30, 1943 - March 18, 2011.  Far from a funeral dirge, it is a guitar ballad that captures the heart of struggle and ultimate reward.  He lived his faith, pounding it out through remarkable testimony, endless acts of kindness and love in the face of unspeakable suffering.
My Dad emulated Jacob, wrestling with God, not letting go until he was blessed.  In fact, the name Israel means "he wrestles with Go...

Elijah's Whirlwind Release Marks Completion

Posted by Keith Howard on Tuesday, November 16, 2010, In : Publishing
The instrumental song, Elijah's Whirlwind, is the only keyboard-driven song on the album.  The rolling keys nudge the rhythm.  However, guitar solo is still the feature as nice riffs are flanked by sass brass and pan flute.  The metaphor that has been a theme throughout the album is carried forward in this last piece too.  God's dealings with humanity are modeled in his choosing the people of Israel as his own.  One prominent prophet, Elijah, left the earth in a fiery chariot riding on the wi...

Loyal Love is Released

Posted by Keith Howard on Saturday, November 13, 2010, In : Publishing
Loyal Love is a musical expression of God's never dying, endless love.  A popular Old Testament maxim is the Hebrew word checed, it is interpreted variously - lovingkindness, favor, goodness, merciful, good deed, in a word, Loyal Love.  This kind of love can only come from God.  This is the perfect final track of my instrumental jazz album.  It carries forward the metaphor of God's interaction in the history of humanity.  His Loyal Love is a motif of scripture from beginning to end.

GoldSash Publishing is proud to release the song XIN3OHdThe title, XIN3OHd, pronounced zinth-ree-ode, is a culmination of my years of study in Greek and Hebrew, brought to bear upon life experience.  It must always maintain an element of mystery.  Its truth discovered will turn the city upside down.  The music conveys that mystery.  It is a very complex jam.  4/4 yeilds to 12/8 only to discover the original 4/4 embedded inside.  It is next to impossible to keep your head from bobbing as it...

New Tune Released, Latin Atkins

Posted by Keith Howard on Friday, October 29, 2010, In : Publishing
What is Latin Atkins?  Don't get nervous.  We're not counting carbs.  The title simply reflects the feel of the song.  There are moments in the music when the finger picking pattern reminds me of sensational country guitarist Chet Atkins, the phenom.  But when I throw in that one 5/4 measure and contrast the minor mode against the melody, it suddenly takes on Latino characteristics.  The juicy rhythm seasons the saucy sax.  You'll need a steady diet of Latin Atkins.

I dedicate this song to my ...

Becoming Like a Child

Posted by Keith Howard on Saturday, October 9, 2010, In : Theology
I enjoy reading and writing theology.  Theology has been described as a conversation that is on-going throughout church history.  Coming from the compound Greek terms theos (God) and logos (word, statement, reason), theology seeks to unearth the not-so-obvious truths that are the composition of bedrock beliefs we hold.  When done correctly, theology draws us closer to God, and by the way, common people do theology every day.  Part of my vision is for ordinary people to engage in discussion of...

Isaac's Last Laugh Released

I'm very excited to debut this song, Isaac's Last Laugh.  It's hard to find words to express the explosion of joy I find in considering God's wrong world righted.  And there is a place in the song when I feel that eruption.  Perhaps you will experience the same thing too.

Musically, the French Horn gets stretched way beyond its classical comfort zone and finds itself tangled in a dual with the Clarinet for background rights.

So what's up with the title?  What is Isaac's Last Laugh all abou...

Soliloquy Released

Titled after the Greek form of acting in which the performer is on the stage all alone, Soliloquy is dedicated to ministerial leaders who continually and sacrificially yield center stage to Jesus.  John Baptist said, "He must increase, but I must decrease" (John 3:30).

This tune is set to the ambience of a lamentation.  You will hear the guitar weep.  Written during a very difficult stretch in the journey of a faith child, the strings bend but don't break.

A Little Bit About the Album Title

Posted by Keith Howard on Friday, July 30, 2010, In : Publishing

I've had an interest in the Eschaton for a long time.  It may have been embedded in my Pentecostal upbringings.  From my earliest remembrances there has been a place of longing for the coming kingdom to be realized fully with all its power, glory, peace, and security.  Among the works I've studied is Hans Schwarz, professor of theology at the University of Regensburg in Germany.  I don't line up with him identically, I sense trace residue of Tübingen's higher criticism, intended or not, nest...
